Swim NODAK FAQs

Questions are part of the process.

Answers for swimmers and families considering private lessons at Swim NODAK.

Yes. Your first lesson is our gift to you. We want you to try us before you buy us and make sure you are comfortable with our teaching philosophy. Everyone, regardless of age, should have the opportunity to learn the lifesaving skill of swimming, whether or not they decide to continue lessons with Swim NODAK.

Swimming lessons can begin as early as 3 months old, but Swim NODAK is not currently equipped to accommodate infants. Children should be independently toilet trained and consistently accident-free before beginning lessons. For most children, ages 3 to 4 are a great time to start. Starting young builds water safety awareness, confidence, and good swimming habits from the beginning.

No. Our trained instructor works directly with your child in the water. Parents are welcome to watch and encourage from the pool deck.

Please book lessons at times you know you can attend, as that time is reserved exclusively for your swimmer. Make-up lessons are available for illness only.

Every swimmer is different and progresses at their own pace. Private instruction allows us to tailor each lesson to your child's abilities and your family's goals. Our goal is to make learning to swim effective, efficient, and as economical as possible while building skills that will last a lifetime.

Young children learn through play, consistency, and repetition. Regular lessons build confidence, and that consistency leads to safer, stronger swimmers. Starting and stopping lessons for summer only can mean spending valuable time relearning skills each year. We recommend swimming through at least one winter after beginning lessons. This keeps newly learned skills fresh, builds a strong swimming foundation, and lets your child continue progressing instead of starting over each summer.

Swim NODAK is operated by homeowner Jenn Stephens and located within her home. We are a licensed business with the City of Grand Forks and the State of North Dakota. When you arrive, you will be greeted by our Site Manager. The space includes a dedicated pool room, rinse station, changing area, blow dry bar, and bathroom. We teach one swimmer at a time and tailor each lesson to individual progress and family goals. Families and caregivers are asked to remain in the building during the lesson. Detailed Policies and Procedures are included with the Enrollment Packet before enrollment.

Your free lesson is a one-time gift of our time and instruction. If you miss your scheduled free lesson without notifying us, we cannot reschedule it. Following a no-show, payment in full is required before any future lesson can be scheduled.

Please bring a swimsuit, towel, dry street clothes, and a great attitude. We prefer to teach beginning swimmers without goggles so they can become comfortable getting their face and eyes wet. As your swimmer progresses, we may ask you to bring goggles to future lessons.

Swim NODAK maintains pool water quality standards consistent with those required for public pools in Grand Forks County and submits monthly water samples to the Grand Forks Environmental Services Department for testing. For comfort, the pool is kept between 85 and 90°F. Frequently used and common areas are cleaned and sanitized multiple times throughout the day.

Lessons are $45 per half hour, and twenty-minute lessons are $30. There is a one-time $15 Splash Fee for registration and insurance per child, per year, payable on the date you book your first lesson. If you decide to enroll after your free lesson, you will be billed weekly on a pay-as-you-go basis. We do not require monthly or session enrollment, but once you reserve a lesson time, we keep that time for your swimmer. Please review our Policies and Procedures for cancellation and make-up lesson details.

Beginning swimming skills require intense focus. Children under five generally benefit most from a shorter lesson format. Twenty-minute lessons help younger swimmers stay focused while building and reinforcing skills through consistent practice over a longer period of time. Older swimmers and adults can often remain focused for 30 minutes or longer, allowing more time for instruction and practice. We offer both options so you can choose what fits your swimmer's attention span, goals, and your family's budget while helping swimmers retain their skills.

We are sorry to see you go, but we understand that schedules and circumstances change. Please provide verbal or written notice to our Site Manager so we can offer your previously reserved lesson time to another swimmer.

Simply select Returning Swimmer when completing our Interest List form. If your annual Splash Fee is current, you may restart lessons as soon as an available day and time that works with your schedule is found. Please note that your previous lesson time may no longer be available.

Yes. Adults can be swimmers, too. Join our interest list and share your goals with us.
